Carl Liersch - General Manager APV-T

CARL LIERSCH

General Manager APV-T

Carl has worked in Design, Manufacturing, Project Management and Management roles at PBR Automotive and Bosch Australia, including as General Manager for the Chassis Systems Engineering Division of Bosch Australia.

Working in the automotive industry for more than 35 years, he has specialised in vehicle safety.  He led the introduction of Airbags and ABS into the Australian cars industry in the early 90s, and ESC in the early 2000s.  He has participated in global automotive projects, spoken at international conferences on vehicle safety, and spent 6 years living and working in Germany on international vehicle safety projects.  In 2015 he led the introduction of automated driving in Australia in a joint project with Bosch, VicRoads and the TAC.

In 2019 Carl took over the role of General Manager at Australia's pre-eminent crash and environmental testing facility, APV-T, in Campbellfield, Melbourne and now has a focus on survivability through product impact, environmental and life cycle testing.

Carl has a Mechanical Engineering Degree and Graduate Diploma in Project Management.

THORSTEN MAERTENS

Operations Manager

Thorsten has worked in Research & Development as Senior Engineer and Supervisor, including roles at Toyota Motorsport and Ford Motor Company.

With a vast career in the Automotive Industry for more than 25 years, Thorsten brings extensive expertise in Thermal and Aerodynamic Systems Engineering, Fluid Dynamics and CAE Simulation. His role at APV Test Centre provides a heightened level of capability, enriching our talent pool in Survivability, Safety, Test, and Evaluation. 

Thorsten’s focus is on enhancing Vehicle Crash Testing operations and expanding our Simulation capabilities for world-class R&D projects. He collaborates with our customers to navigate future challenges, ensuring operations run smoothly and driving innovation in Simulation Projects.  His wealth of experience elevates our services and paves the way for exciting prospects ahead.

Thorsten has a degree in Mechanical Engineering (Dipl.-Ing.) from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany.

Lesley Pain - Photographic Laboratory

LESLEY PAIN

Photographic Laboratory

Lesley is a Scientific Photographer with a range of photographic experience across a variety of industries, including commercial, retail, real estate and technical sectors.

Her main area of interest has always been the manipulation of time through high-speed and time-lapse video.  Her role with APV centres on acquiring high-speed video to accurately document scientific phenomena during dynamic events.

Employed with APV since 2019, Lesley enjoys applying the technical and mathematical aspects of photography.  She has supported the growth of APV’s image capture capabilities by combining meticulous attention to detail with advanced technical expertise to produce high-quality media, often involving challenging and unique requirements.

Lesley’s work has been recognised with awards and nominations from various collegiate and professional institutions, including the Golden Key International Honour Society, the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) and the Australian Museum.

She earned a degree in Scientific Photography with Distinction from RMIT University in Melbourne in 2007.
